Bishapour was built in 266 AD by the order of Shapur I, the Sassanid king. After Shapur’s victory over the Roman Emperor Valerian, Shapur ordered the construction of a city of Ctesiphon in a pleasant area on the road to Persepolis. During the Achaemenid period, this road connected the cities of Persepolis and Istakhr to Susa. Shapur gave his name to this city. An ancient Syrian architect named Epsay was chosen to build the new city.
Anahita Temple is one of the famous monuments of Bishapour ancient city which is located in Kazeroon city.
Next to Shapur Palace in Darhabishapur, there is a large rectangular room called the Temple of Anahita Bishapour. This temple is in the form of a cube, each side of which is about 14 meters, and is made of carved stones without mortar and two walls, and is in the style of Achaemenid architecture. The stones are connected with iron bundles. The temple is located in a depression 6 meters above the ground and a staircase from the palace was attached to it. The temple has no roof and the purpose was to bring the water of Shapur River, which flows at a distance of 250 meters, into the temple to be taken out of the temple by a canal after flowing.
Shapour Cave is located at the end of Tang-e Chogan and four kilometers from Bishapour city in Kazeroon city, the most important capital of the Sassanids, at an altitude of about 800 meters above the ground and its opening is about 30 meters. At the mouth of this cave is the statue of Shapur I (the second Sassanid king) and for this reason this cave is known as Shapur. The statue of Shapur is carved from a giant abstract column that existed in this cave and still stands after 1700 years and is the only surviving statue from antiquity that is about 7 meters high. After many years, the head of this statue is still intact, but its two arms are broken. The statue was overturned and replaced by the Pahlavi Imperial Army in 1336. This statue shows Shapur standing
