Khuzestan province is a province in southwestern Iran, located on the shores of the Persian Gulf and is considered the center of oil and gas production in Iran. This province has an area of 64,057 square kilometers and with a population of 4,710,506 people (2016), is the fifth most populous province in Iran. In 1303, the capital of Khuzestan province was moved from Shushtar to Ahvaz. Since then, Ahvaz is the capital of this province.
Historically, Khuzestan is the oldest region of the Iranian plateau, where the history of human habitation dates back to 2700 BC and the formation of the Elamite civilization in the third millennium BC. Khuzestan is bounded on the north by Lorestan, on the east by Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, on the northwest by Ilam, on the southeast by Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, on the south by Bushehr and the Persian Gulf, and on the west by Iraq.
