Golestan province is one of the northern provinces of Iran. This province was a part of Mazandaran province which became an independent province called Golestan in 1997 and Gorgan was chosen as its center. The largest and most populous city is Gorgan. The religion of the majority of this province is Shiite and the tolerant minority of them is considered. According to the 2011 census, the population of Golestan province is 1,777,014, of which 0.51% are urban and 49.4% are rural. Numerous ethnic groups live in the province, including Turkmen, Mazandaranis, Baluchis, Turks (Azerbaijanis and Ghezelbash), Sistanis, Kurds and Cossacks. Sistani and Baluchis mostly live in the center and south of the province and Mazandaranis in the west and south of the province and speak Tabari and Persian languages. Gomish Tappeh, Ramyan, Kordkoy, Bandar-e-Gaz, Aliabad Katoul, Galikesh, Kalaleh, Maraveh Tappeh and Minoodasht and has 29 cities, 27 districts and 60 villages.
