Tomb of Hafez

Hafez

Hafez or the tomb of Hafez (856 AH – 1452 AD), is the burial place of Hafez Shirazi in Shiraz.

The place in the north of Shiraz, that started from the north bank of the Khorramdareh River in the north of the current Isfahan Gate and extended to the foot of Chehel Maqam Mountain, was called “Mosalla”. This place has been respected by the people of Shiraz for a long time, so much so that many people perform rituals such as congregational prayers, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha prayers in this pleasant place, and some people bury their dead in this place for forgiveness. Part of this area will be turned into a public cemetery. Hafez’s tomb is also located in the north of this plain

After Hafez’s death, the Timurid governor of Persia ordered a dome-like structure to be erected on Hafez’s tomb in the Garden of Mosalla. In front of the garden, he built a large pond that was filled near the Roknabad River. This building was restored twice, first during the reign of Shah Abbas I Safavid and again by order of Nader Shah Afshar.

Karim Khan Zand enlarged and enclosed the compound. He built an arched hall in the style of the Madhouse, that had four large stone pillars to the north and south and two large rooms to the east and west. The building effectively divides the area into two separate sections, the orange grove at the front and the cemetery at the back. Hafez’s tomb is located outside and behind this building, in the middle of the cemetery. On top of his tomb, Karim Khan placed a marble slab 270 cm long, 80 cm wide and 40 cm high, which still exists. In this stone, two lyric poems by Hafez are written in Nastaliq script by the calligrapher Haji Aghasi Beg Afshar of Azerbaijan.

The current building is in the style of Karim Khan Zand’s period. Above the tombstone of Hafez, that is one meter high from the ground, and is surrounded by five circular steps, there is a beautiful one, that is located on eight columns ten meters high. The inner part of the he place Hafez dome is covered with polychrome glazed tiles.
